to remind you of a life-changing retreat):
The Leesburg retreat team continues Clarence Snyder’s dream of taking the original 12 Steps of AA to newcomers with the delightful energy and wisdom of a warm and experienced team of leaders.
The Life Enrichment Center is located about one hour north of Orlando and one hour south of Jacksonville. We can usually arrange airport pick-up and transportation. The facilities include motel style rooms, scrumptious food in the dining hall, a large meeting room plus smaller workshop rooms, kitchen / snack area and serene grounds on Lake Griffin. (You know the scene: swings, benches, moss cover oaks, sun, waterfront, dock).
Clarence Snyder and Annette Nelson started this Florida retreat in 1966. Clarence wanted to bring back the original 1940s format used to introduce new people to the 12 Steps of AA. In 1980, they moved the retreat from campgrounds in Brandon to this beautiful Methodist Church retreat center in Leesburg. On March 22, 1984, Clarence was very ill in Florida Hospital. Grace called Steve and Sue to come visit that evening because Clarence had something important to tell them. Clarence and Grace asked them to accept the mantle of the Came to Believe retreat in Leesburg. The Foremans said ‘yes’, went home, and Clarence died about two hours later. Clarence worked for AA up to his very last breath.
In 1984 we started holding the retreats twice a year alternating leadership between the Foremans and Rapps and other experienced leaders. The whole retreat team works so smoothly together that we know God’s really in charge.
Steve Foreman first met Clarence Snyder at a meeting in 1977 but it took two more years for him to go back to A.A. “on purpose.” In January, 1979, Steve called A.A looking for that old guy named Clarence, learned of the meeting Clarence usually attended that Monday, met him there, followed him around the meetings for a week or so, asked him to be his sponsor, and Clarence took him though the Steps two weeks later. Clarence took Steve to a retreat within 4 months of his first meeting and we’ve been going to retreats ever since. Sue first went to Al-Anon in 1974 where she found relief, support and lessons … to change herself. Clarence took her through her steps again, to confirm that she had touched all the bases. Lo and behold, the steps are the same for AA and Al-Anon.
During their later years, Clarence and Grace earnestly tutored several members of the retreat team about the beginnings of AA and the important principles and practices of the early years in Ohio. Jack Rapp was also one of those Snyder sponsees. When he and BJ married she thought she’d go to Al Anon to see how she could help out her new family. Ha! She learned her lessons well and has been an active member of AlAnon ever since, and also keeping us all focused on the recovery of the entire family.
